2012 Dakar Rally Stage 11 Recap
The 2012 Dakar Rally Stage 11 was from Arica to Arequipa with the bikes covering 534 kms and 478 for the cars. What was special about this stage was that it is the first time in history that the Dakar caravan went to Peru.
The bikers leader board saw a different name enter the top three… as Gerard Farres Guell was in impeccable form to put in the 2nd best time of the day even though its believed he was just a pawn so that Marc Coma who came in third gets “an ideal position in before the big special of dunes between Arequipa et Nasca”. Cyril Despres won the stage, putting him 2mins 22 secs ahead of Marc Coma.
In the car category, the remaining Hummer of Robby Gordon had it rough after breaking a CV boot, a ‘one dollar’ hose clamp and hence stopped for over an hour to try and fix the problem, ‘We lost a CV joint boot and when we finished the first special we tried to change it. It took us too long to change and we missed the transfer section. At the end it was very bad and the silt is all inside the clutch, so we’ve lost the clutch and a wheel fell off… We’ve just had a bad day – we had a horrible day. A 1 dollar part, a hose clamp broke. That put is in a position to miss everything else, so it was a bad day for us, but we’ll just keep fighting until the end. We won’t give up. You never know what will happen, so we’ll ride to Lima.’ Robby’s misfortunes however was a cause for celebration for the Giniel De Villiers who came in 3rd, “I didn’t know about Gordon, but it’s good news for us, though the main thing is we have to focus because there are two more difficult days left for us and the rally is not over yet.”
Stephane Peterhansel overtook his team mate Nani Roma several kilometers from the finish line after Nani got stuck in a dune trying to avoid a biker to claim his 25th stage win in a car on the Dakar.
